Hey Eugene. When I lived in The Dalles, I used to go to the Salmon spring (coming) and fall (departing) ceremonies and salmon feast in the Celilo Lodge and the accompanying pow-wow, and occasional sweats in the sweat lodge down by the Columbia River. Also talking circles in the Red Lodge. I was also involved in their sobriety meetings. The lengthy ceremonies in the big lodge prior to the feasts were very moving to me although I didn't understand a word of what the elder (women) speaker/chanters were saying -there was an ancient music to it which defied words- and the drum "intervals". I miss attending these ceremonies and I'm glad to hear that you are doing something on Celilo.
ReplyDeleteI learned that the Wayam language was only spoken by a few of these elders and they were trying to get it documented so they could teach coming generations. Could you ask your guest if they actually have saved the language -apparently one of the most ancient known spoken tongues in North America. I'll be listenin'! Brian J.
